Teddy Wilson, 1940
Wilson’s 1952 recording of Jack Hanley and Ballard MacDonald’s composition “Indiana” (performed with the Swedish bassist Yngve Akerberg and drummer Jack Noren) is one of 27 recordings featured on Bob Hecht’s playlist devoted to great trio recordings.

…..In this playlist series we have progressed from a single horn player with no accompaniment (“The Naked Jazz Musician”), to an unaccompanied pianist (“Alone at the Piano”), to a pair of players (“Duos—Two of a Mind”).
…..Now it’s time to focus on the unit of jazz musicians often considered to be the quintessential unit when standing alone, and the foundation of a group when functioning as a rhythm section within a larger band—the trio.
…..In the history of jazz there have been many variations of instrumentation within the trio format (think of Benny Goodman’s trio or Jimmy Giuffre’s) but here we’ve concentrated on a handful of the classic trio configurations—either piano, bass and drums, or in a few instances, piano, guitar and bass.…..
…..In the next edition we will add a player and progress to the quartet, but first let’s enjoy some great trios on this 27-song Spotify playlist – among them are those led by Ahmad Jamal, Art Tatum, Teddy Wilson, Bill Evans, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock and Brad Mehldau.
