Village
The light aspires to be equatorial
but each eroded moment quiets otherwise.
The twilight Superior shore fills
with pine smoke from fire pits
just as Coltrane played in the
smoldering light at the Village Vanguard.
The Poplar River gorge tumbles the harvested
downpour over the boulders’
shoulders with the ferocity
of time’s implacable neutrality.
These North Shore stones pile up gratuitously
like my grandfather’s costume jewels,
multi-shaped sparkles that poke
your hands when you cup them
then let them fall like grain
sifted in a pile.
The Lake is just past ice
it’s depth of churn ever cool
misleading the skeptics to believe
this micro wave is an unfounded fear.
