The Lady Sings
He often remembered
how it used to be with her,
his former lover,
who would sing him a song
every night before bed
then teach him each line
before sleep
as she sat upon the chair
beside the door
in the dark,
her weightless voice,
floating melodically from her throat
would saturate his ears,
fill his lungs
one pocket at a time
till he too burst forth in song,
greedy to join her
while she sweetened his mouth
with sugar,
glazed his lips with honey
and the harmony that ensued.
The days were interminable
after nights like that,
sunlight a lengthy reminder
that the moon will eventually rise,
though morning was a hollow reverberation,
the evening’s echo still ringing,
her singing.
