Listening to Life’s Sound Tracks With Terence Oliver Blanchard
Let’s celebrate that Contemporary Cat
and his celestial trumpet! Each day his
musical genius vibrates, accelerates, elevates.
Raised by his dad to listen to opera. Played
piano and trumpet at eight years old. Simply
Stated, nobody doubted tributes were on the way.
Artist in residence at Monk Institute. NEA
Jazz Master. Grammy Awards. Oscar Nominations.
Toured with Hampton. Hancock. Harrison. Shorter.
McCoy Tyner. Jazz Messengers. E-Collective.
Columbia, Concord records. SONY Classics.
The Billie Holliday Songbook. Wandering Moon.
Blue Note’s Breathless, Bounce, Flow, Magnetic.
Sideman. Teacher. Bandleader. Opera, movie
score composer. Visiting scholar – Berklee,
Loyola, UCLA, SF Jazz. From JazzFest heights
to Broadway lights. From intimate movie halls
to opera’s grandest ballroom stages: Fire Shut
Up In My Bones, Champion. Lyric Opera Chicago,
St. Louis Opera Theatre, Met New York. He’s helped
teach about heroes, shared secrets, exposed truths:
Black KKKlansman. Inside Man; Mo Better Blues;
Miracle of St. Anna; A Tale of God’s Will: A Requiem;
Red Tails; Streetcar; 25th Hour; Malcom X; Eve’s Bayou.
Even Disney’s Princess and the Frog. And still,
he’s just as happy playing Chickee Wah Wah,
Snug Harbor, Maple Leaf Bar, Spotted Cat.
So much more to hear, to learn. Let’s Get Lost.
Pay attention everybody. Do the Right Thing.
