The Cannonball Adderley Quintet, on the cover of their 1960 Riverside Records album Live at the Lighthouse. The ensemble – including Cannonball’s brother Nat on cornet, Victor Feldman on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums – is a classic hard bop band, and is part of the 22-song playlist consisting of memorable quintet performances assembled by jazz scholar Bob Hecht.

…..In this playlist series, each month or so we have added an instrument to the mix. We began with solo artists and have moved progressively through great duos, trios and quartets.
…..Now, with the addition of a fifth instrument, we enter a new and exciting realm. We are now in the land of some of the richest musical aggregations in the jazz canon. For here, in most of these selections, we hear the classic front line of two horns, typically a trumpet and a saxophone backed up by a jazz trio.
…..You will hear such classic front-line pairings as Kenny Dorham and Jackie McLean, Clifford Brown and Sonny Rollins, Cannonball and Nat Adderley, Phil Woods and Tom Harrell, Lee Morgan and Wayne Shorter and many other great combinations. In addition, there are several variations on the quintet format such as a Bill Evans group with Freddie Hubbard and Jim Hall or a front line of two saxes as in the Al Cohn and Zoot Sims band.
…..So dig into ‘Gimme Five!’ We are of course just scratching the surface here but hopefully it will inspire you to explore the depths of this powerful number.
Hear here!
