Deep in the Woods
Dusk’s deep waters envelop me
with the quiet embrace of a Bill
Evans solo, the piano so low,
yet so all encompassing (drowning
me in beauty, beauty, beauty —
to acknowledge the insight of Hopkins),
the dying light a site of all we know
of loveliness and what can be celebrated,
must be celebrated, and dying light
and deep blue song fading, lead us all
into inexpressible depths of loss.
The piano whispers alleluia, alleluia,
alleluia, drifts into a silence of illimitable
elegance wed to life’s loss.
