THE THEORY OF HARMONY
The music theory professors
took their treatises
to the dumpster,
their pianos to the tuner,
then took themselves
and their students
into the fields
where timbres circled
a motion of rhythms
the wind renewed
about a tree they sat beneath.
On a branch of melody
sang the happiness of a cardinal
to the drone of crows
and a chorus of yellow warblers,
deepening the sky’s oscillating hues.
It was harmony.
