The Charlie Parker Book by S. Crouch.
Nothing new about Parker that one had not read or heard about the Jazz Icon except
perhaps Rebecca Ruffin. And she is telling no story about her ex-husband.
Parker was laughed off the stage because he tried to play like Lester Young. After that it
was a watershed period consisting of long hours of practice to develop a style of his own which became the benchmark for musicians like Gillespie, Stitt, Davis , Criss, McLean, Morgan etc.
A short while before Parker passed on, in Chicago, he was on the verge of collapse; a friend urged him not to disappoint the crowd; Parker said bitterly , “They just came out
here to see the world’s most famous junkie. ” ( Ralph J. Gleason).
1 1/2 stars to Crouch for the effort of writing this book.
