…..Bobby Troup was a multi-faceted entertainer, accomplished as an actor, jazz pianist, singer and songwriter. As an actor he had a role as “Dr. Joe” in the 1970’s television program Emergency, in which his wife Julie London also appeared.
…..He wrote the song “Daddy” in 1941, which Sammy Kaye and His Orchestra had a #1 hit with in 1941. It was also recorded by Glenn Miller, Bing Crosby, and The Andrews Sisters.
…..He is most remembered for writing the song “Route 66, which he got the idea for along a cross-country drive from Pennsylvania to California. Nat King Cole first recorded it with the King Cole Trio in 1946, which reached #11 on Billboard’s popular music chart. He later re-recorded the tune in 1956, and 1961. Others who recorded it include Bing Crosby (1946), Chuck Berry (1961), The Rolling Stones (1964), Manhattan Transfer (1982), and Depeche Mode (1988).
