…..Born in Tulsa in 1913, the alto saxophonist Earl Bostic played a variety of musical styles during his 30+ year career. His recordings encompassed everything from jazz, jump blues, swing, and rhythm and blues, which he helped pioneer.
…..Bostic played in numerous bands, including those led by Fate Marable, Lionel Hampton, Thelonious Monk and Cab Calloway. For a time, he led the house band at Small’s Paradise and jammed at Minton’s Playhouse. He led several bands whose members included the likes of Jake Byard, Benny Carter, John Coltrane (who he had a major influence on), Benny Golson, Shelly Manne and Stanley Turrentine.
…..His songwriting credits include “Let Me Off Uptown” (with Redd Evans) – immortalized in 1941 by Anita O’Day, Roy Eldridge and Gene Krupa – and “Brooklyn Bridge,” which included players on the Brooklyn Dodgers. His signature hit is “Flamingo,” which was recorded in 1951.
…..Bostic died of a heart attack in 1965 at the age of 52.
