The guitarist Lloyd “Tiny” Grimes was a member of the Art Tatum Trio in the early 1940’s, a backing musician on jazz and R&B recordings, and eventually led his own bands, including a four-song recording session with Charlie Parker featuring the tunes “Tiny’s Tempo,” “Red Cross,” “Romance Without Finance,” and “I’ll Always Love You Just the Same,” – the latter two of which Grimes sang on. In the late 1940s, Grimes recorded a jazzy version of the song “Loch Lomond” with the band billed as Tiny “Mac” Grimes and the Rocking Highlanders, which included Red Prysock and Screamin’ Jay Hawkins. Over the years, Grimes played and recorded with, among countless others, Coleman Hawkins, Roy Eldridge, Earl Hines, Illinois Jacquet, and Pepper Adams, and remained active until his death in 1989 at the age of 72.
