In addition to leading his own bands, the pianist, composer and arranger Mal Waldron (1925 – 2002) played in bands led by Eric Dolphy, Jackie McLean, Charles Mingus, Ben Webster and John Coltrane.  He was also known for accompanying vocalists, and was Billie Holiday’s accompanist from April 1957 until her death in July of 1959.

Jerry Jazz Musician will occasionally publish portraits of jazz musicians that Giovanni has taken over the years. This edition is of saxophonists Johnny Griffin and Von Freeman, who appeared together at the at Bimhuis on June 25/26, 1999.
